My photographic practice is deeply connected to the experience of paying close attention to our environment, appreciating the land and celebrating the resilience of people. The places that I am most deeply attached to are the regions of the pacific west coast where I grew up, the mountains and arid deserts of the west and the northeastern United States, where I currently live. The impetus behind my attachment to photography comes from the intersection of photography’s ability to inhabit emotional places that are initially non-verbal, it’s function as a way to investigate our world and it’s ability to make time stand still. My roots are in darkroom processing and printing of black and white film, which I learned while still in high school, at Santa Barbara City College during the 1980’s. My philosophy of using photography as a way of understanding reality more than as a way of creating reality began somewhere in that darkroom. Foundational to my work is an ongoing curiosity about how human social constructs reveal themselves in our built environment and in our use of the land. As a queer, working class artist, I weave ideas around belonging and perception into my work, whether that is photography, teaching workshops, creating public art projects or curating exhibitions.
