Unsettled Geographies
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the border between the United States and Canada was closed to most people. Before the vaccines were available, in December of 2020, I moved to Aroostook County, Maine. In response to feeling trapped by the closed border, this project was born. It is a survey of the geography, terrain, built environment and the border itself. The project ended once the border reopened in November of 2021. This work was made during a time of limbo, when we did not know what to expect and this corner of the rural United States became simultaneously more isolated and more popular, as Americans bought up real estate away from the cities. This is an edit of a much larger project.
